Laurie Lee: The Lost Recordings

Reflections on love, landscape, childhood, poetry music and much, more from one of the great English writers of the 20th Century.

In 1994, the year of his 80th birthday, Laurie Lee shared his memories of an ‘eventful’ early life in a series of interviews with the film maker David Parker. It was quite a coup, Laurie did not ‘do’ television! He talked with sublime eloquence about his life in the Slad Valley, and the influence of the landscapes and memories of his childhood on his subsequent writing.

Laurie Lee - Down In The Valley: A Writer's Landscape edited by David Parker with a cover illustration by Stroud based artist Andy Lovell is out now via Penguin.

Gallery Pangolin - Eilis O'Connell: 'lightly touching the earth back'

An exhibition walk-through of Gallery Pangolin's current exhibition 'lightly touching the earth back' by Eilis O'Connell, filmed by Steve Russell Studios.

Ireland’s pre-eminent sculptor Eilis O’Connell, studied at Crawford School of Art, Cork and Massachusetts College of Art, Boston. She is a Royal Hibernian Academician, has won awards from the British School at Rome and the Royal Society of Arts and undertaken residencies in both France and Spain.

Many of her works are large scale public commissions and include ‘Ovo’, a large hand carved sculpture in bright white Carrara marble made for Avolon, 1 Ballsbridge, Dublin in 2019. ‘Atoms & Apples’ a sculpture commission in 2013 for Trinity College, Dublin. Other public commissions can be seen in London, Cardiff, Newcastle, Bristol, Wolverhampton, Southampton, Milton Keynes, Belfast, Dundalk, Mallow and Cork.

O’Connell’s inspirations are drawn from a wide range of sources natural or man-made, including archaeology, architecture, plants and things she collects while travelling or hill walking by the sea near her home. ‘lightly touching the earth back’ showcases O’Connell’s beautiful maquettes and her poetic use of materials, including bronze, stainless steel, silver, resin and found objects.

In 2019 O’Connell began working in Pietrasanta, creating new work in Marble. Ridge along with four other previously unseen works will be included in the exhibition.

To accompany the exhibition Gallery Pangolin has produced an illustrated catalogue, with brilliant photography by Steve Russell Studios and beautiful text by Sara Baume.

Gallery Pangolin is exclusively specialised in sculpture and related works. Over the past thirty years the gallery has established a reputation for works of quality and excellence by Modern and contemporary artists.

Matthew Sings OLO

Stroud dwelling singer/songwriter/filmmaker Matthew Lacey (OLO Worms/Grasscourt) sings the songs of his previous band - defunct off kilter indie Bristolians OLO Worms - in this stripped back self-recorded-session for Good On Paper...

"OLO Worms were a glorious mess. For every sweetly-soothing, sun-kissed folky ballad, there was a mind-melting acid rain cloud of ambient terror, or a retina-burning rainbow of hyper-colour pop; a thunderous storm of scuzzed-up punk fury, or a glacial snap of sparse electronica. Two key elements framed all of their output: melody and ideas. OLO Worms had both, by the bucketload..." The Pictish Trail

Colour & Sound by Tom Jacob

Colour and Sound - a Mesadorm Tour Documentary directed by Stroud based filmmaker Tom Jacob...

Tom Jacob was embedded as both documentarian and support act on Mesadorm’s May 2018 tour of debut album ‘Heterogaster’.

In this PRS Momentum supported hour long film, Jacob takes a charming and honest look at the often ridiculous world of grass roots touring as a unsigned and unknown band. At ease in

Jacob’s presence, the band prove perfect muses as they dance like no-one’s watching literally and metaphorically. Colour & Sound weaves together surreal interviews, candid footage and live performances in a weird, hilarious and ultimately touching story of five great friends playing a few gigs to a few people.

Satoko Fukuda with Simon McCorry: In The Middle of Nowhere

IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE

Dance, Choreography, Words - Satoko Fukuda
Music, Cello - Simon McCorry

We often find ourselves conflicted answering yes or no. The resulting emotion takes us to 'nowhere', leaving us unclear and floating. Through dancing comes reassurance, through movement comes certainty.

Performed 14/02/2020 as part of Resolution 2020 Festival of Dance at The Place, London

Satoko Fukuda
Satoko was born in Fukuoka, Japan. She has been dancing as a freelance dancer in UK, France, Italy, South Korea and Japan. Her work About the leaves was invited to perform at Lourdes Danse Festival, Resolution 2019, Dance Festival Croydon and ANIMA MUNDI Festival. Her new work In the Middle of Nowhere is based on her struggle to experience the differences between Asian and Western culture.

Simon McCorry
Born in London to mixed Indian/British heritage, Simon McCorry’s recent work is a rich combination of field recordings, adept loop based compositions and atmospheric improvisations that explore the rich sonic possibilities of the cello. From droning stillness and devastating harmonic simplicity to abstract microtonal atmospheres, his work recalls post-classical greats such as A Silver Mt Zion at their most plaintive and Stars of The Lid at their most majestic.

Jab Jab by Amanda Whittington

Unfortunately Good On Paper magazine is currently on a hiatus/break/leave…(read statement here for further info)

However.

We can try and provide much needed culture in other ways!

Good On Paper TV – self recorded sessions by local musicians, artists, writers, poets, filmmakers and performers whether it be a concert in their rehearsal space/studio, an impromptu stand-up comedy/poetry show, DJ sets, a reading of their own published tome or previous footage and films rarely seen, hard to find or not shown before…

We start of with the short music documentary Jab Jab by Amanda Whittington - recently screened at the last Good On Paper Party.

JAB JAB

Jab Jab the acclaimed 1970s rock reggae band are back! After over 30 years their music was found and digitised and at last can be heard once more. Fusing rock, reggae, ska, calypso, funk, soca and Afro beats, their music is as original today as it was back then.

JAB JAB played far and wide to audiences large and small. With their high energy fusion of rock reggae, calypso and afro beat, they staged a show where few could resist the urge to dance. They played alongside household names such as The Clash, The Jam, The Boomtown Rats, Heatwave, Siouxie and the Banshees, Steel Pulse, Toya Wilcox, Misty in Roots, Tom Petty, Dire Straights, Chic...

Playing every type of venue with more than 200 gigs per year including working mens clubs of the coal fields to the Hammersmith Odeon (now the Apollo) with extensive tours of the UK and Europe, JAB JAB unleashed their energising rhythms on all who dared come close...
